INCIDENT ENERGY

A four-channel video installation (Lucas & Pander) filmed with thermal imaging cameras depicts the human body within nature, using modern dancers to express a creation drama that examines our energy, the universe, love, birth, conflict, decay and death. A simple narrative weaves the cyclical nature of light and heat energy, from our galaxy to humanity, and the stark beauty of black and white infrared footage combining the emotional theater of opera with eerie scientific observation.
With primal movement, dance choreographer Jim McGinn and accompanying performers Mizu Desieto and Douglas Allen appear as translucent primitive humans, living alabaster sculptures in a timeless terrestrial realm where bodies possess a simultaneous interiority/exteriority; as their warm veins, cold extremities and breath are all visible. Scenes filmed in nature and in contemporary settings unfold against black snow-covered forests, empty beach landscapes and dense urban crowds, juxtaposed with vast solar, lunar and interstellar (NASA SDO) imagery. No dialog, with an electronic soundtrack.
INCIDENT ENERGY exhibited at 'Other Suns' a science fiction exhibition co-curated by Erin Coates and Jack Sargeant, in partnership between Fremantle Arts Centre and Revelation Perth International Film Festival.

Ch. 1 Main narrative using modern dancers portraying primitive humans to convey a creation story. Ch. 2. Birth narrative of pregnant belly, birth and later an infant nursing. Channels 3 & 4 (not pictured) depict landscapes, surveillance culture, and solar, lunar and galactic imagery (NASA SDO).

Choreographer Jim McGinn performed at the opening reception of Incident Energy at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, Portland, Oregon. McGinn interacted with a pillar of ice on a pedestal, silhouetted against simultaneous live thermal video projection that echo his movements and detailed the changes in his body temperature. This performance allowed the audience to see what an infrared thermal camera detects in real time with no special effects. The ice pillar and his skin register as black due to the very cold temperatures. Near the end of the performance McGinn smashed the ice pillar with an axe.
